Senior Travel Tips to Help You Have a Memorable Vacation!

senior travel tipsSummer vacations are something everyone looks forward to! Checking items off of our bucket lists, leaving the worries of the everyday world behind, exploring new destinations. And helping an older loved one enjoy the experiences with you on the vacation makes it all the better. There are, however, certain considerations to keep in mind, and our senior travel tips can help pave the way to a successful trip with an older adult:

  • Schedule a pre-trip medical doctor visit. To be certain your senior loved one is physically able to comfortably manage the rigors of a rather long car trip or air travel, and all that your intended destination can provide, a check-up with the older adult's medical doctor is essential. Use this opportunity to determine what prescription medications he or she must take along, any sort of food restrictions to follow, and any other concerns or guidelines to consider.
  • Keep your itinerary senior-friendly. Make sure you plan sufficient time for rest, and figure out the top places that you want to make a priority to see, with a few other backup options that may be included if your elderly loved one’s endurance permits. It’s also useful to research available amenities provided to older persons – motorized scooter and wheelchair rentals, accessible entryways and pathways, preferential seating or even early admission times, and so on.
  • Plan for the unexpected. Keep a directory of emergency contact numbers in your phone, and carry a printed list also. It’s also useful to confirm the location of the nearest hospital to where you’ll be vacationing, as well as other potentially necessary amenities such as restrooms and spots to stop for meals, beverages, or some other supplies. Also be certain your family member has an identification card with your name and cellular phone number listed, just in case he/she happens to become separated from you.
  • Unwind and have fun! It’s natural to fall into a pattern of protection with our elderly loved ones, and of course we desire to keep them safe; but be careful not to have the pendulum swing beyond the boundary as to become restrictive or patronizing. Allow plenty of opportunities for your elderly family member to express himself and explore to his heart’s content with openings such as, “What do you want to look at next?” or “Let’s give this a try!”
