Incorporating activity into a senior’s daily routine is the best way to ensure that staying active becomes a habit. It can begin simply by getting up and down out of a chair unassisted, which utilizes a variety of muscles.
With the help and consultation of a physician, even frail seniors should be able to work in a daily exercise routine that can help them increase strength and endurance and improve their overall quality of life. Some tips for integrating a fitness routine into daily activities include:
- Exercise in short, 10-minute bouts.
- Set a schedule. The key is to set aside specific days and times for exercise, making it just as much a regular part of a daily schedule as everything else.
- Wear comfortable clothes that don’t restrict movement.
- Wear leg warmers or over-the-knee socks that can help prevent sore muscles in the lower leg.
- If a movement causes pain, stop! The old adage “No pain, no gain,” is not true.
