CPSC’s New Senior Safety Initiative on Consumer Products

We often don’t consider common household items and products among the dangers that exist for seniors. However, did you know that adults age 65 and over account for 65 percent of the annual deaths associated with products such as ladders, electrical fixtures and even bedding? Also, over 5 million older adults are treated for injuries associated with these types of products, accounting for around 2 million emergency room visits per year.

Safety for older adults is a prime concern for both medical and consumer product industries. Recently the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) launched the Senior Safety Initiative to address these troubling statistics. The initiative will focus on reorganizing the agency so that products that pose a high safety risk to older Americans will be spotted and addressed sooner. The agency will also be doing closer assessments of products designed specifically for older adults to ensure that they are indeed safe.
