6 New Medical Tests Help Diagnose Common Illnesses

Undergoing a medical test is rarely an enjoyable experience, with some requiring unpleasant advance preparation, and then all the poking and prodding that may be involved. But researchers are finding better, easier ways to do tests that can provide more information, many times in a less invasive or uncomfortable manner. Here are six of the newer and more exciting developments in medical testing. Check with your doctor to see if any of the following might be recommended for you or your loved ones:

  1. Oncotype DX: Through genetic testing, Oncotype DX allows doctors to see a more clear distinction between fast-growing and slow-growing tumors in prostate cancer. This gives them a more efficient means of determining if removing the prostate is necessary. The test is performed on the tissue obtained from a biopsy.
  2. DNA/Medication Matching: Genetic screening, done through a blood sample, can help doctors prescribe a number of medications more appropriately. For example, the results may outline if a particular patient will respond well to certain antidepressants or if they may react badly to them. A list of more than 150 medications for which DNA testing can be helpful is available on the Food and Drug Administration’s website.
  3. Fingertip Blood Testing: Over 200 blood tests can now be performed with a finger prick, a much easier and cheaper alternative to traditional blood tests. And with dramatically reduced wait times. The tests are offered through Theranos’ patented process, available in many Walgreens locations.
  4. Colonoscopy Alternative: With no sedation or recovery time needed, with the Pillcam COLON2, you swallow a small, disposable camera that travels through your digestive system in about 10 hours. The camera transmits to a recording device worn around your waist.
  5. Proactive Heart Disease Testing: Rather than waiting for a heart attack to strike, testing levels of trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) in the blood can show if there is a potential for heart problems before they begin. Doctors can create a personalized nutrition plan for those with higher levels to improve their heart health.
  6. ECG Check: An electrocardiogram (ECG) is now available at your fingertips. This is done by attaching a small, sensored device to the back of a smartphone. If there are changes in your blood pressure or you have symptoms that indicate there may be something wrong with your heart, all you need to do is place your fingertips on the sensors, and results will be delivered to your doctor.
